Great product, exactly what I wanted.
Not sure why people what people are complaining about in terms of smell. It’s a piece of industrial grade rubber, that quickly lost all smell by the two week. Just don’t keep near your bed or in your living room for a bit if it really is a problem.
I actually purchased 2.5’s, 5’s and 10’s to help complement a larger olympic sized set from Fringesports. Like nearly all plate sets you will want to wash these when you get them with dish soap a couple times to get the grease off the urethane. The factory molds use the grease so they do not stick to the molds. This will also remove most of the rubbery smell, which should be completely gone within a month.
We got these for a small workout room. They are not Olympic size. If you are trying to use them for Olympic lifts as a substitute for rubber weights they are a bit too small. The sizes mirror normal weight sizes. What we really like are the handles. We uses them almost like kettlebells or medballs. They have been great for that. You can grab the handles with one or two hands and do plenty of swinging and twisting movements with just the plate. Easy, transportable and much cheaper than KB or Medballs for what you can do with them.
I purchased these plates as a 300lb set from Amazon that included an 7′ olympic chrome barbell back in 2010. This year, I purchased two additional 10lb plates. I have yet to find a more egonomic style rubber plate for the price. There is certainly a premium for these plates, so shop around and look for deals. But in the end, these plates are so worth it. Yes, they do have small cosmetic imperfections in them, but overall are quite nice looking. The comfortable grip is what I love the most. The smell is initially strong, but it goes away within a month. I recommend washing them with dish soap and then coating them with a rubber conditioner. To make these plates perfect, I carefully used a dremel with an ultra fine sanding tip to smooth away the excess rubber trim on the inner side of the handles. Now the plates are even more comfortable to pick up and hold. The bar that was included with my set is decent quality. The only negative with the bar is that the knurling is slightly smoother on one end compared to the other. It is not a huge deal, but something I do notice.
