ALPS Mountaineering Foldable Foam Mat Review 1: great price compared to others

Havent had it on the trail as of today (3-16-18) but here is my take so far. First thing i noticed was how feather light this thing is, feels well constructed for its purpose that i will useing it for, great price compared to others. People, keep in mind this is a mat NOT A MATTRESS! This suppose to be an added layer between you, the sleeping bag and the cold ass ground.

If you want a mattress then buy a mattress, not a mat, but understand the weight difference, good luck hauling it on your backpack for miles if hiking. These are perfect for hiking, there super light, ultra light! Using my V-cord on my pack im able to strap it directly on to the top of my backpack, the price was very resonable .

I won’t bother giving review update once experienced on the trail as im not expecting to feel as if im lying on a mattress as some person reviewed earlier, i know what to expect with basically a 2″thick foam mat, its a MAT people, get over it. Camping and hiking (multiple day hiking) are 2 completely different things and gear will be different.

The difference you ask? When hiking your only making /staying at camp for maybe 5% of the time and want the lightest of gear to carry around while camping your at camp 95% of the time and want the comforts of home, so figure out which of the 2 your doing and shop accordingly. Just my 2cents.

ALPS Mountaineering Foldable Foam Mat Review 2: Kept my fat arse comfortable on the Mississippi River.

I bought this prior to kayaking on the Mississippi River from source to the Gulf. It worked just fine for me. I kind of liked the looks of the Temperpedic mat that is sold at retail stores but couldn’t find one. It was on the back of my kayak for 93 days, so it handled being abused a bit too. I’d buy another one if this one ever dies or gets lost.

ALPS Mountaineering Foldable Foam Mat Review 3: Does the job for a fair price

This is the equal of the “t’rest.” z-lite pad at a much lower cost. I use this to increase the r value of my sleeping pad for winter camping and as a seat around the campfire. It will not provide a ton of comfort on its own if you are on hard or rocky ground. But it does eliminate the pain most of the sharp rocks without fear of middle of the night deflation.
