Reviews of Marcy MWM-990 Home Gym
Review 1: Well built, from heavy materials. The system is …
Well built, from heavy materials. The system is more heavy duty than some that cost more. Assembly was a little tougher than expected, but when the diagrams failed, I was able to look at the exploded view in the parts list to figure out what to do. So far I am enjoying the system more than the others I have owned!
Review 2: it is a good gym; with a little extra design effort it …
For what this is, it is a good gym; with a little extra design effort it could be a great one. I am 6’3 and I wish it were just a little bigger – I find that I am always just a little short of a full range of motion. I wish I could reach just a little higher for the lat pulldowns. The handles for the chest press are fine for the press, but their positioning make it impossible to do flys without removing them entirely. The screws are a kind of non-standard size – I’ve looked around for the metric threading with a butterfly end but haven’t been able to find them for less than $4 or $5 each. It would be nice if these handles had thumbscrews or knobs on them to facilitate the quick release/reattachment. As it is, I have to keep an allen wrench handy until I find the right screws.
There is a removable angled armrest for “preacher bar curls”. I’d love to see one that is fully vertical – with that I could put a chair in front of it facing the weight stack, rest my chest on it, and be able to use the chest press handles for horizontal rows.
Overall, though, for the money it is very good. All the parts were there and well labeled – the only damage was the “MARCY” decal on the front, which doesn’t matter to me. It went together very easily – I highly recommend a socket wrench and a screwgun with an allen-key (the directions recommend an adjustable wrench – the allen keys are provided). It took me only a few hours to assemble working with a friend.
If you are smaller than me you’ll have no problem with the lat pulldowns; but unless you’re quite thin I would expect that you’ll have problems with the flys.
Review 3: Pretty good deal.
Pretty good deal for the price at Amazon. I am satisfied with the build quality, in that nothing seems too flimsy. In construction, the weights in the stack are similar to those old “Orbatron” weights, kind of plastic surrounding something that feels like concrete. However, they serve the purpose just fine.
One thing I would note is that the system seems to have a somewhat limited range of motion. I am about 5’8″ and with some exercises, I reach the limit of the range a little sooner than I would like. I was able to adjust a pulley to improve things, but I’m not so sure if it would work well for me if I were taller or had longer arms. The assembly directions are adequate, comprising detailed, labelled drawings.
For a few steps, it could have helped to have a close-up view and/or a sentence or two of clarification. In any case, play close attention to the parts list for each step, especially the washers. I had to backtrack once or twice. My last observation is that the connector for the bar is a chain and two locking carabiners. This provides for some flexibility in length, but I found it cumbersome to move the bar to go between curls and lat pulls. I wound up cannibalizing some non-locking ‘biners from an old Bowflex setup. In summary, though, I think it’s a pretty good deal for the price, and serves its purpose for me just fine. I’m using it daily.
